O'Reilly ignores Limbaugh's history of racially charged remarks in claiming McNabb comments are "only thing we can find"
Discussing the controversy that erupted around Rush Limbaugh's failed bid to become part owner of the St. Louis Rams, Fox host Bill O'Reilly claimed "[f]air-minded Americans know that playing the race card is easy and hateful. The only thing we can find about Rush Limbaugh is that he thinks quarterback Donovan McNabb is overrated by some people who want black quarterbacks to succeed." But contrary to O'Reilly's claim that the "only" racially charged or insensitive remark that Limbaugh has made is about McNabb, Media Matters for America has documented numerous such remarks, including his comments that "[w]e are being told that we have to hope [Obama] succeeds, that we have to bend over, grab the ankles ... because his father was black" and that "Obama's entire economic program is reparations."
Looking for "evidence that Limbaugh is a race-baiter," O'Reilly claimed "only thing we can find" are his McNabb remarks
O'Reilly characterizes McNabb remark as "only" evidence against Rush. As Media Matters has documented, Limbaugh resigned from a brief 2003 stint as a commentator on ESPN's Sunday NFL Countdown after he made remarks about Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb that ESPN called "insensitive and inappropriate."
From the October 15 edition of Fox News' The O'Reilly Factor:
O'REILLY: So what's the evidence that Limbaugh is a race-baiter? We investigated the statements that are being tossed about. The first one allegedly has Mr. Limbaugh praising James Earl Ray, convicted of assassinating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. There's no evidence that Rush Limbaugh ever did that. The accusation comes from a far-left guy named Jack Huberman, who provided no evidence to back up the claim. Huberman is also the source for Limbaugh's alleged quote saying slavery was not entirely bad. Again, Huberman provided no backup. The allegation was also published on Wikipedia without any sourcing whatsoever. Mr. Limbaugh denies making both comments.
Finally, a Kansas City Star columnist named James Fussell quoted Limbaugh as saying bad things about the NAACP. The quote came from a newsletter called "Flush Rush." But so far, there's no confirmation the disparaging remarks, again, were ever made.
So what we have here are accusations without merit. But in our hypermedia age, that's enough to paint someone as a racist.
Now, I've been through this. A couple years ago, I said on the radio that having dinner in Harlem at Sylvia's Restaurant was the same as having dinner anywhere in America. The context was my grandmother, who was very afraid of blacks, even though she never even met a black person. Her fear was irrational. And I made that point quite clearly.
But the vicious website Media Matters put forth I was denigrating a black-owned restaurant. And some people actually believed it without even listening to the radio broadcast, which I posted on billoreilly.com so everybody could hear it. Well, there goes my NFL career.
Fair-minded Americans know that playing the race card is easy and hateful. The only thing we can find about Rush Limbaugh is that he thinks quarterback Donovan McNabb is overrated by some people who want black quarterbacks to succeed. Mr. McNabb resented the remark, as he should have. He's a good player, and his color has nothing to do with his performance. I think Limbaugh made a mistake with that analysis.
But that doesn't make him a racist and should not disqualify him from owning part of a team. We've got to stop the racial witch-hunting in America.
O'Reilly: "We have the best research staff in the business." Referencing the work of The O'Reilly Factor research staff during a segment about the controversy around Limbaugh's failed bid for the Rams, O'Reilly claimed that "[w]e have the best research staff in the business, the best. There is nobody better at researching than The Factor." (The O'Reilly Factor, 10/14/2009, retrieved from the Nexis database)
Media Matters has documented at least 28 examples of Limbaugh making racially charged remarks
Limbaugh has an extensive history of making racially charged remarks about minorities. Media Matters has documented numerous examples of Limbaugh's racially charged and insensitive remarks about minorities, including his comment that "in Obama's America, the white kids now get beat up with the black kids cheering" [The Rush Limbaugh Show, 9/15/09] and that "Obama's entire economic program is reparations" [The Rush Limbaugh Show, 6/22/09]. Examples include:
- "We are being told that we have to hope [Obama] succeeds, that we have to bend over, grab the ankles ... because his father was black."
- "I do believe" Obama is an "angry black guy."
- "[I]n Obama's America, the white kids now get beat up with the black kids cheering."
- "Obama's entire economic program is reparations."
- Obama is "more African in his roots than he is American" and is "behaving like an African colonial despot."
- Obama is "Halfrican-American."
- "Obama has disowned his white half ... he's decided he's got to go all in on the black side."
- Sotomayor "a reverse racist" appointed by Obama, "the greatest living example of a reverse racist."
- Obama "wants us to have the same health care and plan that he had in Kenya" and "wants to be the black FDR."
- Latching onto LA Times op-ed, Limbaugh sings "Barack, The Magic Negro."
- "God does not have a birth certificate. Neither does Obama"; Obama "has yet to prove he's a citizen."
- Limbaugh on Gates controversy: "Here you have a black president trying to destroy a white policeman."
- Limbaugh suggests Obama would not have acted on Somali pirates if he'd known they were "actually young, black Muslim teenagers."
- Limbaugh suggests Democrats, media believe "you can't criticize the little black man-child."
- "The government's been taking care of [young blacks] their whole lives."
- "The days of [minorities] not having any power are over, and they are angry."
- "[M]inorities never do anything for which they have to apologize."
- Limbaugh: "The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well."
- Limbaugh says "NFL all too often looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips."
- Limbaugh declares basketball "the favorite sport of gangs."
- Limbaugh invented "racial component" to Hackett's decision to withdraw from Ohio primary race.
- Limbaugh on Survivor series: "African-American tribe" worst swimmers, Hispanics "will do things other people won't do."
- Limbaugh suggested Colin Powell only supported Obama because of race.
- Limbaugh: Gates is an "angry racist."
- Limbaugh called illegal immigrants an "invasive species."
- Limbaugh repeatedly calls Native Americans "Injuns."
- Limbaugh says Democrats' interest in Darfur is securing black "voting bloc."
- Limbaugh says that if "feminazis" had remembered to oppose "affirmative action for black guys ... they wouldn't face the situation they face today."
O'Reilly again falsely claimed Media Matters distorted his Sylvia's comments
In fact, Media Matters provided audio and transcript -- in context -- of O'Reilly's relevant comments. Contrary to O'Reilly's claim that Media Matters distorted his 2007 comments about his dinner at Sylvia's restaurant, Media Matters provided accurate audio and transcript of O'Reilly's relevant comments in context.

He cares about Rush Limbaugh's rights, but with Dr. Tiller he has no Shame?
He Symbolically takes a bath in Dr. Tiller's Blood.
In some kind of Evil Religous Cleansing that does no justice to Noah's Flood.
Speak truth to power.
Mr. News
"O'Reilly the Tiller Killer" or "Hannity the Mis-informer" Which one of these is the True Champion of telling Lies?
They both use Mark Furman a proven Racist & Perjuror from O.J.'s Murder Case.
Each time Fox News puts Mark Furman on the air they are spitting in every African American's Face.
Speak truth to power.
Mr. News
Yesterday, I noticed how BO started his cavalcade of bullschidt with some really off-the-wall items about Dittodick that I'd never heard before.
It would probably make BO's eyes bleed, but if he searched this site (or many others) he'd find a whole lotta verbatim, in-context quotes demonstrating Rush's bigotry.
But that would be something a real journalist does.
If Edward R. Murrow came back and saw what was being passed off for journalism at FOX NEWS, he'd never stop throwing up.
wait, i thought he was looking out for me!
Notice also that MMFA does not include in their list the NAACP and James Earl Ray comments attributed to Limbaugh. That is tacit admission that they are a bogus charge.
He seems to use it a lot.
Limbaugh: "Democrats will bend over, grab the ankles, and say, 'Have your way with me'" to African-Americans and gays
Limbaugh: "Troopergate" investigation is "pure sexism," but Palin "didn't bend over and let" Alaska politicians "have their way"
Limbaugh on Obama: "We are being told that we have to hope he succeeds, that we have to bend over, grab the ankles ... because his father was black"
Limbaugh: Chrysler and GM have bent over and "grabbed their ankles" for Obama
Limbaugh: "We get tarred and feathered as Nazis because we just don't bend over, grab the ankles"
Then there's "butt boy"
Limbaugh: “Matt Lauer sounds like Robert Gibbs’ butt boy”
Limbaugh: "These mainstream media people, the drive-bys inside the Beltway ... They are butt boys for the Obama administration"
Limbaugh declares Ed Henry a “butt boy,” but “Jake Tapper is the one guy that’s outside of the butt boy bubble in the White House press room”
And "anal poisoning"
Poetic justice: Limbaugh tries to tear GOP apart. "Lindsey Graham is certainly close enough to [McCain] to die of anal poisoning."
Limbaugh: If Gordon Brown keeps "slobbering" over Obama, he'll "come down with anal poisoning and may die from it"
Limbaugh Invokes "Anal Poisoning" Again: "[Obama] knows that he's being followed around by a bunch of sycophants who are going to die of anal poisoning before the year's out."
Limbaugh on the ABC News health care forum with Obama: [I]f you want a sign to put on your TV tonight while you're watching the ABC infomercial: "These people will die of anal poisoning."
Limbaugh says Letterman was in "full anal poisoning mode, meaning if he keeps this up he's gonna die of it"
You are the one who is denying reality.
And we note that once the evidence was provided to you, nary a peep since.
Crickets.
A "racist"?
No. (There's only one race: the human race; therefore a "racist" would be one who promotes humanity thereby instantly disqualify Dittodick)
A bigot?
DING DING DING! We have a winner!
Also, I notice that you don't respond to any of the twenty eight quotes MMfa has in this article. Are none of them racist either?
Undocumented immigrants an invasive species is mocking what? Maybe you cant' see the racism in these examples(Courtesy of Craig):
Limbaugh called illegal immigrants an "invasive species": We're supposed to bend over and grab the ankles and say, "Deal with it."
Limbaugh: "We get tarred and feathered as Nazis because we just don't bend over, grab the ankles"
because of your own racism. Just sayin'.
Are illegal aliens all one race? I believe there are illegal immigrants of all races. Maybe this is showing the left's own racism??? If you people were the least bit intelligent, you could understand the metaphor of what some people believe illegal immigrants do to our country.
What does grabbing the ankles have to do with racism? You lost me there.
Please, don't tell me you don't understand what Rush meant by, "...because his father was black." I'll give you a chance to think about it.
Please, don't tell me you don't understand what Rush meant by, "...because his father was black." I'll give you a chance to think about it.
No I want YOU to explain it to me! What did he mean? I'am waiting...
Again, I ask, what does a bone in the nose have to do with black people? Again I ask, do you have a copy of Rush saying it?
Can you really not understand what Rush means by an invasive species? Think about how an invasive species would work to destroy a nation. Remember we aren't talking about immigrants. We are talking about illegal immigrants who come in all races. You still didn't describe to me how a comment about illegal immigrants equals racism, when we have illegal immigrants of all races flowing into the U.S.
Congero, find me the script or copy of Rush telling the caller to take the bone out. If you can, I will answer your question. I'm not going to accpet the premise without some evidence of the quote taking place. And no, you can't use MMFA as the reference.
Also, please find the invasive species comment. What do you think about all of the "terrorist" who are coming into our country illegally? Would they not be something that wants to slowly, under-the-radar, come in and destroy our country? Essentially making them like an invasive species (think "War of the World's"). You still haven't told me why that comment would be racist. You keep ignoring basic points to my argument. Are there not multiple races and ethnicities represented in the illegal immigrants flooding our unsecured borders?
Why won't you tell me why it was a racist statement (Obama's father being black quote)? Tell me your interpretation. What's wrong? MMFA didn't tell you the interpretation? They just told you to be outraged, and it was racism!!! Yet you try just to fail miserably.
Do you have a copy of Rush telling the caller to take the ring out of his nose? How can you prove that is racism? Do only blacks wear nose rings?
You may need more help than you can get here, Grunt. Maybe change your screen name to "Baa-a-a-a-" as well.
And congratulations, you're the second dittohead on this thread to "explain" Rush's remarks by saying that everybody should "understand" it. Step up there, sport. Pretend we're all really ignorant, blank slates. Explain.
You think maybe these buzzwords and codes that Rush uses to hypnotize and excite you sheep don't really stand up to analysis?
It is not a tacit admission of anything. MMFA has plenty of ammunition without resorting to providing quotes that are in dispute, but nonetheless may be true. It is not worth arguing about when compared to the undeniable numerous examples of blatant race-baiting by Limbaugh.
Let's think about this. The disputed quotes mentioned, as far as I know, have not been widely used. The only time I've seen them mentioned at this site was when MMFA linked to an article by somebody else that included the quotes, attributed them to the book they were pulled from, and included the note that they were not verified.
I think somebody on a cable news channel used them, and added the correction later that they were not documented.
And all of the wingnuts are insisting that none of the racist comments by Rush are racist, while obsessing over a couple of disputed quotes that have barely seen the light of day except to mention that they are not verified.
So, MMFA does not include any of the disputed quotes, as they haven't been proved true (and it would be very difficult to prove that they were never said).
And to the twisted wingnut mind, this is some sort of "gotcha", a "tacit admission" by this site that quotes they have never used are "bogus".
The convoluted thinking that passes for right wing logic is amazing.
Randy
I think they just used the shortlist..or most recent hits from the Big Druggie!!!
Really? That's a fact? Can I borrow your Racist dictionary, I need to know the alternate meaning of "fact" that you're using.
Randy
I guess you just don't like when his analysis disproves what you want to believe.
I'll let you know if you're right the first time it happens.
As far as I know, BilldO won't mention Olbermann's name. He's afraid one of his Factor Fans who doesn't have every channel except Fox blocked might check out Countdown and see O'Reilly exposed as the moron he is.
so far, that hasn't been a problem i've encountered with mr. o'reilly.
i guess, because limbaugh, o'reilly, hannity, et al, style themselves as "entertainers", nothing they say qualifies as racist cant, because, they're just being "entertaining".
i expect we'll be seeing mr. limbaugh in black-face soon, just to prove what an un-racist he is.
of course, the bottom line is this:
a bunch of whiny, rich white guys decided they didn't want another whiny, rich white guy to join their club. i believe that's what's known as the "right of free association".
i should think mr. limbaugh would be proud that these guys exercised their constitutional right to have nothing to do him.
CNN, FoxNews, NBC - they are the ones with insight not based in the reality of everyday Americans.
Guess what I've done my own poll and found that most people think what you just said is BS and your thinking meglomaniacal. See how that works? If thats the only example you have of the President dividing the country you got nothing. You got your head so far up your arse you can't see the light.
MPellegrino has gone scientific, surveying 50-75 of his acquaintances, who unanimously saw race as having nothing to do with the Gates incident.
There's probably a fairly big margin of error in his poll, as it can be hard to hear the responses clearly through the hoods..
And I hope Congero eventually learns to spell and punctuate properly. See, insults are easy and can be fun!
Wow, that is some top fuel delusion, Baffled. Are you being sarcastic, or do you seriously consider this a "statement of fact"?
I guess if you believe Boss Hogg does serious political commentary or comedy, you'll believe anything.
