Matthews echoed Kurtz's baseless claim that Limbaugh's ratings have recently "doubled"
SUMMARY: Chris Matthews asserted that Rush Limbaugh's ratings have "doubled," echoing a claim by The Washington Post's Howard Kurtz, who wrote in an article that Limbaugh's numbers "have nearly doubled since his feud with the White House burst into the media limelight." But the Post later reported that "there's no actual survey data to support such a figure." Moreover, Limbaugh himself has reportedly stated that the "latest numbers" he has seen for his show were for January, "well before this kerfuffle began."
On the March 8 edition of his NBC-syndicated television show, Chris Matthews discussed Rush Limbaugh's recent attacks on President Obama and said, "Limbaugh's numbers are doubled. Barack Obama's numbers are not doubling." Matthews' claim echoed a March 6 Washington Post article by Post media critic Howard Kurtz, who wrote, "By one measure, Rush Limbaugh is a clear winner this week: His ratings have nearly doubled since his feud with the White House burst into the media limelight." But the Post reported on March 7 that "there's no actual survey data to support such a figure," and that the sole source Kurtz cited as evidence for his claim admitted that his "research" was based on "what we're hearing" and "on the e-mails, the calls, all the buzz this controversy is generating," as Media Matters for America Senior Fellow Eric Boehlert noted. Moreover, as Boehlert also pointed out, Limbaugh reportedly told Washington Examiner chief political correspondent Byron York on March 6: "The latest [ratings] numbers I have are for January, well before this kerfuffle began."
The only evidence Kurtz offered to support his claim that Limbaugh's "ratings have nearly doubled" was a quote from Talkers magazine publisher Michael Harrison, whose "research" suggested that Limbaugh's ratings had grown dramatically in recent days:
"The people who love him are a very small segment of the public," said Michael Harrison, publisher of Talkers magazine, whose research indicates that Limbaugh's weekly audience has spiked from 14.2 million to about 25 million since the controversy escalated. "A lot of people still think he's a shock jock, a hatemonger, a right-wing radical, or hold his personal baggage against him."
However, in a March 7 Post article, staff writer Paul Farhi reported that Harrison's "research" was "based on his discussions with station program directors around the country," and that there was "no actual survey data to support such a figure":
Figuring out the size of Limbaugh's flock "is an art, not a science," says Michael Harrison, the editor of Talkers magazine, a trade journal about the talk-radio field. "It's very hard to come up with an exact answer. It really reveals the embarrassing state of radio ratings."
Harrison's own calculation -- that Limbaugh typically attracts about 14.25 million listeners weekly -- is based on Arbitron figures from about 30 cities and spot checks of a similar number of stations. Harrison stands by his guess even though Limbaugh's program is heard on more than 600 stations across the country. "Once you get below the big markets, [the audience] doesn't add up to critical mass," he said.
Harrison said his estimate of a big spike in Limbaugh's audience this week -- some 25 million, a figure quoted in The Post -- was also based on his discussions with station program directors around the country. Although there's no actual survey data to support such a figure, Harrison said "it's what we're hearing, based on the e-mails, the calls, all the buzz this controversy is generating. We put a little bit of our interpretation on it, added it all up, and that puts you in the ballpark."
Farhi further reported that Arbitron, the leading audience-measurement company "has never publicly released a national estimate for Limbaugh, and it says, in effect, that the job is too complicated, expensive and time-consuming to bother with." Farhi explained:
The difficulty comes from the vast patchwork that is Limbaugh's radio empire. His three-hour daily program is carried on more than 600 domestic stations, but these stations don't all carry the show at the same time or even for the same duration. Most air all three hours of Limbaugh's broadcast each weekday, but some carry only two hours. Arbitron has never attempted to aggregate all of this audience data for this many stations and times. "There is no economic motivation for any objective third party to do that kind of analysis," says Thom Mocarsky, an Arbitron spokesman.
From the March 8 edition of NBC-syndicated The Chris Matthews Show:
MATTHEWS: You know who can talk? Limbaugh. You don't have to like the big guy, but you know what he does? He defends capitalism. But what he says is, "You, Mr. President, are out there raising taxes and getting rid of deductibility and itemization, and putting more injury on those of us you've already injured. You're hurting the people who are driving the truck."
CLARENCE PAGE (Chicago Tribune columnist): Right. And nobody believes that but ditto-heads. The fact is, Bush has already done the same darn thing. That argument isn't working right now. People know that government is in a spend mode. And by the way, you know we've been in more than a --
MATTHEWS: Limbaugh's numbers are doubled.
PAGE: -- more than a -- we've been in --
MATTHEWS: Barack Obama's numbers --
PAGE: That's his job.
MATTHEWS: -- are not doubling.
KATHLEEN PARKER (Washington Post Writers Group syndicated columnist): Yeah.
PAGE: Hey, that's his job, though.
MATTHEWS: OK.
PAGE: If you look at the numbers -- about 18 percent of the public agrees with Limbaugh. You don't win elections that way; you get radio ratings.

Way to GO, Chris. Poor old Rush needs all the help you can give him. I'm sure he appreciates it. (Might be a good idea to check with him first, though...)
So what exactly is the beef here. So he went from 14 million to 25 million. ok. Or that both numbers are estimates. ok again. The fact remains that this has made Rush more popular, and as the economy gets worse, Obama and his team focus on Rush. Change we can believe in.... lol The entire Obama admistration against one un-elected talk show host. It is not a fair fight, Obama needs more people.
Are you really as stupid as you're pretending to be? Rush is done--stick a fork in him. The Rape-publicans will soon run from him as fast as they can once they realize that this blubber-ass isn't what they want as a front man for their party.
On the other hand--please put Rush out in front. It's so fitting that the "family values party" is led by a 3 times divorced, draft dodging, drug addicted, bigoted, college drop out who has tendancies toward pediphilia. Democrats could use the assurance that Republicans haven't a prayer until my grandkids retire.
Well, he is who the republicans take their cues from.
14 million has a source. 25 million is an absolute guess.
Anyway, Rush's ideas have failed multiple long-running practical trials, so he should be dismissed by anyone regardless of ideology or ratings.
well after listening to rush im sure preisdent obama will have more people. because of the vile statements he makes will turn off those but the hard core fringe people
What a fraud. The oxy-moron has been claiming he's got 20 million listeners per week for years. It's more likely that he's got 4-5 million dimwitted dittoheads who listen to him every day.
The only thing more despicable than this slimeball are the delusional-dreck dittoheads that buy his brain-dead bigotry.
His audience is probably the size of FOX "News" which is approximately equal to 2 to 3 million dittoheads daily.
Thats funny. Fox routinely beats MSNBC and CNN, just as Rush has the largest radio audience. You and Rickey may hope he is done, but he is only getting more popular with each screw up Obama makes.
Past View: The numbers are so small to be laughable. Go ahead and keep your delusions and Democrats will just keep winning elections.
Coincidentally, membership in the KKK and neo nazi parties have also doubled since Obama was elected. Boy, do I smell a correlation in the making...
Of course you have evidence to back that up right? Wrong!! Just another of your hate filled nazi obsessed fantasies. And again, KKK Byrd was the leader of your party.
Of course I have proof, and BTW, byrd denounced the KKK long ago while your hero duke still is going strong...
http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/02/26/hate.groups.report/
Oops, there goes another fact to dispell your projecting again!
guess you dont like to read my stuff when i school ya huh?
as snoopy has already pointed out and i also gav ethe wiki link that gave sen byrd's own words about his regret of being in the kkk. but you wouldnt care about that cause it disputes the facts that u hope to try and make up
And this means ...?
It means people will watch spectacular lies more than they will watch mundane truth.
It means there's a market for ignorant trash by ignorant trash for ignorant trash.
The fact that Fox "News" and Rush's numbers may be 2 or 3 % higher doesn't prove their relevance. It proves there's a lot of stupid people who can't get thinking folks to stroke their insecurities daily, and need constant reassurance that it's okay to be a bigot.
Is Rush one of your heros? Answer carefully--you understand that Rush has admitted he's UnAmerican when he said he wants Obama and the United States to fail. What a loser.
That's not it. He's getting more popular because republicans have no other place to turn. It's kind of sad actually. One day republicans may be relevant again.
But alas, Republicans only chance to be relevant is after Democrats--once again--clean up the mess Republicans left us.
Oh joy, I pay for the republican's screw ups and then I pay for their clean ups. They sure get us coming and going.
I guess that's the price we have to pay for not winning the birth lotto and not being born into a family that's filthy rich.
I ran for township office last Nov. A group of 6 of us beat a predominantly Republican board in a 60% republican town. Now they're crying like little brats becuase we're cleaning up their mess. They've started a recall petition, even though we won 54% of the vote. We're popular with both political sides, and the old guard can't stand it.
One of them stated that it was their duty to do everything in their power to distract us from our governing. I asked why it was his duty, and he said it was the duty of every Republican in America to distract and cause problems for Democrats for the good of our country.
These people are outright nut cases. I've got a good idea who he listens to on hate-talk radio. . .
yes and the ones who watch everyone else but fixed news seems to be the smart ones....
Hey POV:
YAWN.
Robert Byrd was in the KKK 50 or so years ago.
You and the rest of the Clueless Clown Posse really need some new material ....
You're just displaying your own bias. Byrd's KKK membership could bring down the entire Democratic party. And even if it doesn't, Chappaquiddick surely will!
Kinda like hoping for the rapture, right? It's gonna happen, I know it will! ;)
I am willing to bet that his rating have increased. I hated Rush two weeks ago. Now I just mildly dislike him and have even started listening to him again to see what all the fuss is all about. I am sure millions of others are doing the same thing.
If you listened to him before, then you should know what all the fuss is about. Why would you raise your opinion of him simply because he was called out for saying something divisive and incendiary, when that sort of behavior is surely why you stopped listening to him and started hating him in the first place? Or did you stop listening to him because you thought he became more reasonable and fair for some period of time?
OK, now you're being reasonable and logical, so you should know your argument won't have a chance.
You know, I'll bet that hurts. I mean, pulling out a one might not be too bad, but I'll bet some damage could be done trying to pull out a seven.
The only reason I stopped listening to him was the Michael J. Fox ordeal. I like MJF a lot and am myself a strong advocate for stem cell research. This is one of those areas I am not on par with conservatives: life begins after birth of the child, not in utero.
So if you're familiar with his loathsome personality, I still don't see why this particular incident raises your opinion of him. It seems fairly consistent in that he says whatever he thinks is necessary to advance his cause, with no consideration of whether it's respectable behavior or not. I'm missing the leap from "I want Obama to fail" to your thought process of "That's different, I guess he's not so bad and I'll start listening to him again".
I started listening to him again because the liberal mainstream media seems eager to destroy him and hush him up. He's been on the radio for over 20 years so why the big attack on Rush now? Why would Obama mention Rush by name? A lot of us that didn't drink the kool-aid still know nothing about Obama. Sorry, but it's true.
How long had he been on the radio when he made the comments about Michael J. Fox? Was he a neophyte at that point?
You understand how something he says is offensive when it's a cause dear to your heart, but when he suggests that he wants to see millions of people lose their jobs and homes because he wants Obama's policies to fail, you don't see the problem. His comments were atrocious, and people are reacting in good faith just as you did a couple of years ago. Obviously Obama mentioned him by name because those in Congress should act in the best interests of the people and not on the whims of a radio personality. That isn't a radical thing to say.
If anyone should want to hush Limbaugh up, it's people like you. You're never going to have a functional government with his sort of divisive rhetoric. Bear in mind this is a man who said that Republicans should be the party of opposition, and not come up with ideas. If he's stupid or crazy enough to think that's what the country wants to hear, then he doesn't deserve to have any significant radio audience.
OK. Now, I no longer believe your earlier claim. "liberal mainstream media seems eager to destroy him and hush him up" That's right-wing paranoia fantasies if I have ever heard them. Rather you stopped listening to Rush for a period of time or not, you should keep listening to him because he will continue to reiterate all the crazy things you believe even as they are proven false over and over again.
(warning this is a joke im being sarcastic)
BLASPHEMY! now y ou must make your obligatory sacrifice to the alter of Rush!
Matthews doesn't have his numbers correct. 52 million people watched President Obama's speech to Congress. That's nearly double even the wildest claims about Rush Limbaugh's numbers of listeners.
"there's no actual survey data to support such a figure."
Neo-cons believe in the power of positive thinking. If they just believe hard enough words change definition, economics reverse and WMD appear out of thin air.
