REPORT: Dobbs' immigration obsession out of step with CNN's news coverage

July 27, 2009 5:18 pm ET

SUMMARY: CNN's Lou Dobbs is consumed by the topic of immigration, and undocumented immigrants specifically. Over a period of six months, his show devoted many more segments to immigration than did CNN's The Situation Room, and 13 times the number of words per hour to the topic.

Comments

In yet another example of the degree to which CNN host Lou Dobbs is out of step with his network, a Media Matters for America analysis has found that since the beginning of the year, CNN's Lou Dobbs Tonight has devoted far more coverage to the topic of immigration than CNN news program and Dobbs lead-in The Situation Room. A study of Lou Dobbs Tonight and The Situation Room transcripts from the Nexis database reveals that from January 1 through July 23, Dobbs had more than three times as many broadcast hours that included briefs, segments, and panel discussions on immigration -- often focusing on undocumented immigrants -- as The Situation Room, which is three times as long as Dobbs. In word count, the difference is even starker, with Dobbs devoting about 528 words per hour to discussions of immigration -- 13 times more than The Situation Room's 40 words-per-hour average. These findings undermine CNN/U.S. president Jonathan Klein's claim reported in an April 26 New York Times article that Dobbs is "doing more of a straight newscast than he's ever done before."

As Media Matters has noted, Dobbs' coverage of immigration-related issues has been marked by discredited theories and wild claims. In recent days, Dobbs has also helped advance the repeatedly debunked myth that President Obama has yet to produce a valid birth certificate, resulting in criticism from his CNN colleagues and other media figures. An earlier Media Matters study found that significantly more Republicans and conservatives than Democrats and progressives appeared on Lou Dobbs Tonight during the first four months of 2009 -- yet another finding that called attention to the danger Dobbs poses to CNN's credibility.

Media Matters' analysis of Dobbs' show found that from January 1 through July 23, the program has spent a total of approximately 74,000 words on discussions of immigration. In a total of 140 broadcast hours found on Nexis, Lou Dobbs Tonight has had 77 broadcast hours that included briefs, segments, and panel discussions on the topic of immigration. The show has devoted about 528 words per broadcast hour to the subject.

Meanwhile, The Situation Room has featured a total of approximately 17,800 words on immigration during that period. In a total of 441 broadcast hours, The Situation Room has aired 24 broadcast hours that included briefs, segments, and panel discussions on the subject, with an average of about 40 words per broadcast hour:

Methodology

Media Matters searched all Lou Dobbs Tonight and The Situation Room transcripts available on the Nexis database for the search terms "immigr! or alien or undocumented or amnesty." The date range for the search was January 1 through July 23. Only transcripts of weekday broadcasts were included. Every brief, segment, and panel discussion about immigration in those transcripts was included in the word count. For panel discussions, which can range over several topics, only portions that included a substantive exchange on immigration were included. Topics that are sometimes associated with immigration, such as drug violence along the Mexican border, were included only when they specifically invoked any of the search terms we used. Speaker identifiers and television directions in the transcript were also included in the word count. In-show teasers were not counted. For Lou Dobbs Tonight, viewer mail on immigration was not included in the word count. For The Situation Room, viewer mail on immigration during "The Cafferty File" segment was included. Word counts were calculated using Microsoft Word's word count function.

What's the point of this "report"? To say that Dobbs does cover the same stories that every other show on CNN does? Or that he covers illegal immigration more than the others because everyone knows that is his pet issue. So. If there is anything that keeps me from watching these cable news networks for more than 10 minutes once in awhile is the endless repetition of stories from show to show. I know MMfA has it in for Dobbs right now, but this is pointless.

I'd gather because the research shows an overwhelming trend.

Dobbs is not a newscaster, as in to be a fair and unbiased news reporter. It's his show, he is a commentator. Like many others, they put on their own shows what they want too. If one doesn't like they don't have to watch it. And shouldn't.

Spin your definitions anyway that makes you comfortable. The man has a national voice. If he's going to put out conservstive missinformation, MMfa is going to point it out.
Ignoring the missinformation from the coorporate media has never helped. I waited a long time for anyone to confront Limbic. In the interm he shaped the national debate for over a decade. Thats what failing to respond can do for a nation. An option of no worth that I can see.

Yeah, your right. He could never make it at Fox, since he is obviously not fair and balanced.

If you don't know the difference between an opinionated commentator who is paid to comment, and give opinions versus a straight newscaster who reports the news fairly and without opinion, then do you think I am going to help you out? Uh huh. You're on your own.

        It does indeed.

But in a sane and rational sense, which Dobbs does not do.

Dobbs does not come across as independant, like he claims. Everything he harps about is right-wing. Sounds like a closet Obama hater and hypocrite when it comes to Mexican immigration. The man is married to a Hispanic for crying out loud.

The main problem with this MMFA story is that it has no context and is unscientific. Doing a Nexis search doesn't reveal what he's been saying, only that he's used those words. There are probably pro-immigration candidates, pundits, or journalists that use those same words with high frequency.

A companion story revealing quotation after quotation about Dobb's beliefs would give this "story" relevance. I don't watch Lou Dobbs, and I never have. I hate angry old rich men with soapboxes.

You could do a search for "Obama or Barack or 'The President'" on MMFA and it might come up with 10,000 hits. Does that mean that MMFA hates the president? Of course not.

I'm not saying that Dobbs doesn't provide scads of misinformation about undocumented aliens, but this article doesn't prove it.

You're missing the story. Unless Dobbs writes and edits every word he says on the air and picks every story, there's a staff at CNN who are pushing nativism and letting it out on Dobbs' show.

I agree that Lou Dobbs spends more time discussing illegal immigration than other commentators. That's because there is an estimated 13-20,000 illegal immigrants here in the US bankrupting our hospitals, overwhelming our schools, police departments and social service agencies. Has anyone ever thought that the US taxpayer simply cannot afford the havoc caused when employers pay these workers less than minimum wage while local communities pick up the tab for those here illegally? Did you know that when illegal workers migrate to other sectors of the economy, wages fall? We would be better off if illegals went home where, just maybe, we could support them via small loans for cottage industries throughout South America? Do you really think drug cartels would not happily assist terrorists wanting to come into the US via our southern border? Why are liberals so hell bent on welcoming those who break our immigration laws while tens of thousands wait to enter the US legally? It certainly can't be because illegals are educated and ready to make a significant contribution to our economy. Perhaps it's because the wealthy need nannys, cooks and gardeners.

The fact that Mr. Dobbs emphasizes particular topics in preference to others should not be subject to criticism simply because it does not conform to his network's "policy", whatever that is. CNN has never articulated any particular overarching policy on specific topics, and Mr. Dobbs certainly should be able to articulate his emphasis and opinion. His program is not "journalistic news" per se, nor is Rachel Maddow, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Keith Olbermann, etc. The only place where intellectual and relatively balanced discussions of news take place is on PBS News Hour with Jim Lehrer or Judy Woodruff. The analysis of word count does not indicate actual bias, but does indicate emphasis and inclination. Media Matters needs to bring gradations into its analysis to get a better depiction of the media, rather than only confining it to "bias" alone.
