SACRAMENTO, Oct. 2 (UPI) -- California Attorney General Jerry Brown says his office will look into videos purportedly showing members of ACORN offering advice on how to open a brothel.

In a letter to California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger last month and made public Thursday, Chief Deputy Attorney General James M. Humes said the office "opened an investigation of both ACORN and the circumstances under which ACORN employees were videotaped," The Sacramento Bee reported Friday.

The controversy centers on a series of surreptitiously taped videos in which a couple posed as a pimp and a prostitute were advised on how to set up their business by people identified as workers with the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now.

Under California law, it is illegal to videotape people without their permission, except in some cases for security purposes, the Bee wrote.

"ACORN welcomes the investigation of Attorney General Brown into the illegal videotaping of ACORN workers," ACORN spokesman David Lagstein said. "The investigation will show that the only crime committed was by" the videographers.

Schwarzenegger, who asked Brown to investigate the matter two weeks ago, praised the decision Thursday.

"I am outraged and deeply concerned by these allegations," Schwarzenegger said in a statement. "If these reports are true, they warrant prosecution under the fullest extent of the law."

If Dick Cheney was secretly taped the Republicans wouldn't want to prosecute the people who taped him? How about if Sarah Palin was secretly taped? Or Rush Limbaugh? Or Glenn Beck? Or Sean Hannity? Or Michelle Bachmann? Or John Boehner?

Those people are not a criminal enterprise like acorn is.

But after watching another bleeding heart judge , Missouri I think it was, sentence a child molester to probation, after molesting a 6 year old, what could they possibly give O'Keefe. A medal might be in order.

That's your opinion. In my opinion Dick Cheney is a criminal enterprise...and Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity are abominations against humanity.

But that's not the point... Either laws were broken or they were not. If ACORN broke the law then prosecute them. If O'Keefe and Giles broke the law then prosecute them. Or are you arguing some sort of nullification...that the criminal act was justified. If so, what are you going to say when right wing extremists argue that the first guy who takes a shot at President Barack Obama was justified?

So, because terrorists are terrorists, it's okay to torture them? So, when a criminal breaks the law, we don't need to give them any rights ever again? They stop being human somehow?

How do those examples compare with Kennedy, Rangel, Jefferson, Barry, Hastings and others? Are they criminal enterprises?

Perhaps you look up the definition of the word and then comment again.

And BTW, are there any convictions on your list? Maybe just liberal allegations, or smoke. Lawsuits against Cheney have been dismissed, allegations against Palin have all been politically motivated and have gone nowhere. And Limbaugh, doctor shopping?, get a grip.

Are there any convictions of ACORN?

And you might be surprised to learn that, so far, nothing on any of those videos shows any criminal activity. The ethics of those involved may be shaky, but there is nothing that breaks any existing statutes (and nothing that doesn't occur in accounting and legal firms every day).

Limbaugh is a drug addict (once an addict, always an addict) and a suspected pedophile who was caught purchasing narcotics on the street and smuggling a controlled substance. Ever wonder where he really goes on all of his days off? I mean, have we ever actually seen a photo of him on the golf course? And do you think he actually attends church on Sundays? He isn't even awake that early on a Sunday morning - and not a single person has ever been found who attends church or golfs with Limbaugh. Pretty suspect behavior from a known addict and proven liar.

You should be thanking O'Reilly for pointing out how some judges don't punish offenders in the manner they should. The likes of Olbermann and Maddow do not consider the issue important enough to cover it. We should be getting rid of judges like this guy .

Some here have supported judges for actions like the one I referenced, on the basis that they are working to change laws they do not agree with. But that is not what a judge is supposed to be doing, they are not lawmakers.

The judge up in the northeast that sentenced the child molester to a short term did that in order for him to receive psychological help. If he had sentenced the man to a long prison term her would not have received help.

After the state changed their policy on who got help and who didn't, the judge imposed a longer sentence.

I'm sure Billo didn't mention any of this.

"Those people are not a criminal enterprise like acorn is."

          Really?

If the term "criminal enterprise" means anything, it must mean more than simply a legal enterprise in which employees break the law: it must be an enterprise that sets out to break laws purposefully. The Yakuza? Yup, a criminal enterprise. A company whose sole existence is to help another company break tax law? That would be a criminal enterprise.

But ACORN's purpose is to help poor people have safer neighborhoods, get affordable housing and healthcare, and register to vote. Despite the apparent hopes and wishes of FNC and of many other institutions and people, the fact is that it's not a crime to advocate for poor people and help the poor to organize.

Now, compare that to two people who actually set out to record people without their permission in violation of state laws. That, you see, would be a criminal enterprise.

If the day ever comes when Fox puts 1/2 the effort they put into "investigating" Acorn, into investigating Halliburton or Blackwater for misuse of our tax $$, I'll truly drop to my knees and pray to Jesus, because I expect him to show up at any moment.

Also, I'd expect the Easter Bunny, Santa Clause and the Tooth Fairy to be right behind him.

Get real. The only reason these "news" outlets put so much effort on the small fry like ACORN, is to deflect your attention (yes, I mean YOU) away from the real issue - ALL politicians are wasting your tax $$ - conservative as well as liberal, and you ignorantly fall for it. Fox is playing you, and you blithely let them do it.

The Judge was operateing within the guidelines he was forced to use by the laws enacted by Missouri Legislators. The judge had to take into account the time the offender had eady spent in jail.
Instead of attacking the judge maybe you need to let the Republican legislators who control the State Government know what you think of there laws.

It's ok to demand accountability and transparency from ACORN since they are federally contracted. But it's hypocrisy to single them out when they only receive 53 mil over 15 years whereas Haliburton and Blackwater have received billions in the last 6 years and have murdered innocent people and poisoned us troops. I'm sure if ACORN poisoned US troops or assassinated key witnesses, you would say something, yet these other two corporations get away with it (they are conservative in ideology and how convenient that conservatives turn a cheek to their crimes against humanity) and no one cares. This is quite a double standard that proves how this acorn fiasco is a politically motivated hitjob against a social justice organization that enfranchised poor minorities who naturally vote for obama democrats and not country club white republicans. It has payback written all over it. Haliburton and blackwater are war profiteers who have committed crimes against this country and against humanity, going so far as to denigrate our servicemen and kill innocent civilians all while hording billions of taxpayer dollars. ACORN helps poor minority communities with a variety of public services. The conservatives who pushed this ACORN story are morally bankrupt since they criticized acorn out of proportion to far worse federal contractors.

O'Keefe has a history of taking extreme, racially motivated, positions in his investigations. He claims his extreme position, like asking Planned Parenthood if his donations could go towards killing only black babies, is to show how radical his targets are.

I personally think it is a window in to his disgust for anyone poor, minorities, or any organization that would attempt to help them.

There seems to be two different arguments. 1. ACORN - if employees were offering advice about illegal activity, then the employees should be fired (or whatever), but individual wrongdoers should not result in an entire organization being punished. When a singular contractor or any individual in any other business entity (that receives gov't funding) is found guilty of breaking the law, did those companies lose funding. Even with the proposed bill, should that bill be backdated and if yes, how far back...just to this alleged offense, or back 5 years, 10 years?

If the individual who filmed this is found guilty of breaking the law and he was doing it under the FOX guise, should he be tried as a singular individual, or should his company be libel as well?

These should be debated and a legal standard upheld, rather than the helter-skelter arguments flying around the Internet. Unfortunately, the Fox network has become embroiled as they promoted the video to discredit an agency, rather than to follow a legal approach, like send the video to an AG before making it a media event. This is yet another example of Attack in Public and apologize in private. And if the videographer is found guilty, then if there is a legal way to attack FOX, then that should be persued.

      Fellow Matterers,

The video journalist, Giles and O'Keefe, have no defense, based on the, 'clean hands doctrine.' ACORN, a public forum, is responsible for its employees. A conundrum.

AG Brown has to decide whether the journalist were investigating allegations, or if it is a case of malicious entrapment. The latter appears to be the case, being that Ms. Giles was, 'in the wrong side of town,'(paraphrase), and wondered what she could do to malign ACORN. The journalist may beat the rap, but will not beat the ride. Obviously, they are hero's to the white side of culture. e.g. Ollie North, G. Gordon Libby, Martha Stewart, etc.

Please, look at this objectively. Most will not, being they are too backwards to view issues with any neutral perspective.
It has been the same in all cultures, America is not immune.

      It be it,
      Ronin Kannushi.

Fox - There they go again, slicing and dicing to support their side.

To define the ACORN office as a public forum because the organization takes in tax $$ is stretching things a bit. Which of course Fox does anyway.

ACORN, CA and MD should sue. Let this be settled in court. I hope O'Keefe and Giles are finally exposed for the liars they are. Let's see the ENTIRE SET OF VIDEO TAPES, not just the edited portions that support one side.
