Self-identified "completely independent" anti-ACORN filmmaker received thousands from conservative investor for prior video

September 22, 2009 11:27 pm ET by Media Matters staff

From a September 22 post on the Village Voice blog Runnin' Scared:

James O'Keefe, the activist filmmaker who achieved sudden fame for a series of undercover videos recording ACORN workers, has repeatedly said that he is "absolutely independent" and received no outside funding to make his films.

But the Voice has learned that O'Keefe, in fact, has had heavyweight conservative backers who funded the young filmmaker as recently as a few months before his ACORN films were made.

The ACORN videos are actually just the latest of several films O'Keefe has produced and uploaded to YouTube. An earlier film posted in February, "Taxpayers Clearing House" featured nonwhite, working class people being duped by O'Keefe, who led them to believe they had won money in a sweepstakes.

That video was produced with the help of a grant -- said to be about $30,000 [Thiel's spokesman says closer to $10,000 -- see update] -- from Peter Thiel, one of the founders of PayPal and an early investor in Facebook -- an investment which made him a billionaire.

Kinda reinforces that notion that right wingers don't like non-white working people. Nah, that couldn't be...right wingers are such fair-minded, compassionate, unbiased people. To right wingers, it's not the color of a person's skin that matters...it's how straight the person's hair is. ;>)

I don't understand how he can claim to be "independent" when he founded our school's conservative magazine which has such illuminating features as "Liberal of the Month."

I have never seen a more racist and bigoted publication than the Centurion, and I've seen the stuff they hand out at the townhall meetings. It's a crying shame that that abomination of a paper is funded by MY student fees.

Ironic, really. They complain about socialization, when their paper is printed with ink and money paid for by taxpayers.

I recall an interview with Hannah Giles, where she had mentioned that she had spent everything, her entire savings, to do these videos. Is James holding out on his prostitute?

O'Keefe receiving money and then lying about it does not surprise me. In an article he had written, he specifically stated that he was an activist, he advocated the use of deceit to acquire information, and he stated the following:

Most importantly, conservative activists need to be their own media, and use their independent media to obtain their goals.

He has no qualms in lying or fabricating news stories because he is only interested in succeeding with his conservative activist goals.

Just a couple of days ago, several of the righty's here were completely at a loss to understand what the previous actions of this filmmaker might have to do with the current situation. They couldn't understand why looking at his character and his behavior and the influences on his 'prostitute' partner might be relevant to the discussion.

Still got questions or doubts, boys?

In the words of the dear congressman Wilson, "You lie!"

The video spoofs the huge corporations that got money from the bailout. The first 40 seconds or so is what media matters (for very little) describes. And by the way, there are several "non black" taxpayers that find out the bailout will cost them, $28,000, too.

The video group even tries to greet an exec at his home, it's so acorn/seiu/moorish in its genre.

By the way, another headline might read, "Nut job, supposedly completely independent, website gets heretofore unknown patronage from georgy porgy soros." Gee wonder who that is mm(fvl)?

Well if his videos are about him lying to people to get a response that he wants its not hard to believe that there are lies about the funding of the videos to get the response he wants.

This tool also had a documentary of himself calling Planned Parenthood claiming that there are too many black babies and they should be aborted. He doesn't deserve the fame he's getting...though I suppose it will be fleeting.

Do you have documented proof taht he recieved any money or a grant? Cancelled check, paperwork or anything? Planned parenthood were all to happy to take his money to kill unborn black children, what does that say about them?
ACORN is filing charges against O'keefe and the young lady as well as Breitbart. I'm so glad and cannot wait for the discovery part of this case, this way ACORN must open up there book to real scrutiny.
How much money does MMFA get from that slob Soros?

Joe Scarborough program just did a piece on O'Keefe. They had a clip of an early video he made in which he wants to donate to Planned Parenthood in Ohio for the specific purpose of aborting black babies. He claims there ae too many black people in Ohio.
Do we need to hear anymore from this man?

Of course we do... PP collects government grants and funding. That's taxpayer money. Maybe not everyone "wants" there money going to such organizations. Who is the government to redistribute our wealth without our consent? 2010 couldn't come soon enough...

        shirelychurch,

The whole video clip shows how amoral planned parenthood is and willing to engage in a horrific enterprise. They demonstrate that getting the money is more important than the purpose, sure kill black babies no problem.

If you don't want more from O'Keefe, then you fear how unscrupulous this group along with the felonious acorn, will be exposed for what despicable things leftists do within the normal course of the day, illegal children working in brothels we helped set, no biggie!

Do some research on Margaret Sanger (she of the founding of planned parenthood) and eugenics, now that will scare you. Here's just one of her sweet thoughts:
"More children from the fit, less from the unfit -- that is the chief aim of birth control." (Birth Control Review, May 1919, p. 12)

What does any of that have to do with his false claim that he is independent? Clearly, he is not. He is lying during his investigation and he is lying to the public after his investigation. That is not "good journalism," that is simply propoganda.

Now look, proud conservative, we've already established that you're a complete idiot. Why not at least be an idiot that stays on topic?

          Pot, meet kettle.
You undoubtedly express such outrage at the actions of Operation Rescue, Family Research Council, and other right-wing groups that advocate murder, right?
What of Tom Delay preventing enforcement of worker-abuse laws in the Marianna Islands? What of the forced abortions he allowed by his actions? Where were you?

Abortion is legal in this country. As a "proud conservative," you are in no position whatsoever to preach morality to any of us.
Incidentally, I do not believe the PP people were taking him seriously, you can hear that in some of their voices.

No offense, but you really need to describe why the videos were so controversial when reporting on this story: ACORN staffers gave housing advice to persons posing as a prostitute and her pimp seeking advice on how to run their illegal business which included the smuggling of underage girls from El Salvador for use in the sex trade.
